SUMMARY:Kidney Care Susnet Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Caring for Patients\, Protecting the Planet: Integrated Solutions for Sustainable Haemodialysis\nHear from Julia Audije Gil and Rodrigo Martínez Cadenas on integrated\, evidence-based approaches to sustainable haemodialysis\, spanning clinical practice\, service design\, and prevention. \n🎤 Speakers:\nJulia Audije Gil – Researcher\, Fundación Renal Española\nRodrigo Martínez Cadenas – Bioinformatician\, IIS-FJD & PhD candidate\, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid \nJulia Audije Gil is a researcher at Fundación Renal Española\, focusing on kidney disease prevention\, clinical research\, and the environmental sustainability of renal care. She holds a PhD from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)\, specializing in Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity\, and a Master’s in Biological Anthropology. Her background bridges ecology\, human biology\, and environmental change\, bringing a multidisciplinary perspective that integrates human and planetary health. \nBefore joining Fundación Renal Española\, she developed her career across academic research and scientific communication\, collaborating with national and international institutions. In her current role\, she is involved in the design and analysis of research on sustainable models of kidney care\, including green haemodialysis and prevention strategies\, with a focus on identifying evidence-based solutions to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high-quality patient care. \nRodrigo Martínez Cadenas is a bioinformatician at IIS-FJD (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria\, Fundación Jiménez Díaz) and a PhD candidate at UAM. He investigates how preventing kidney disease can reduce both clinical burden and environmental impact. Through the PREVERENAL project\, he models patient pathways from early detection to treatment\, exploring how screening and proactive pharmacotherapy can reduce reliance on carbon-intensive renal therapies. With a background in data science and sustainability\, and as a contributor to the EU-funded KitNewCare project\, he brings a systems-level perspective on sustainable nephrology. \n💬 About the talk\nHaemodialysis saves lives\, but it involves a high consumption of resources. In a world where the health of the planet and the health of people are interconnected\, the question is clear: can we provide better care without causing more harm? \nThis presentation addresses this challenge from a central\, clear idea: sustainability in dialysis is not only necessary but possible. Based on the experience of the Spanish Renal Foundation and the Jiménez Díaz Foundation\, concrete\, measurable\, and applicable solutions are presented\, based on scientific evidence\, which allow for the reduction of environmental impact without compromising the quality of care. \nThe approach is structured across three fundamental lines. Firstly\, the optimization of processes through the measurement and monitoring of environmental indicators\, together with the improvement of key technologies such as water treatment systems\, climate control\, or concentrate supply models. These interventions\, often simple\, demonstrate that small actions can generate big changes in resource consumption and waste generation. \nSecondly\, innovative organizational models such as proximity dialysis are explored\, which not only improve the quality of life of patients but also significantly reduce emissions associated with transport. \nFinally\, the focus is placed on the most transformative element: the prevention of kidney disease\, capable of reducing both the clinical burden and the environmental footprint of the healthcare system. \nAltogether\, these strategies point toward a paradigm shift in nephrology: moving from a medicine focused solely on treatment to a more efficient\, responsible\, and innovative model. Because\, ultimately\, sustainability in haemodialysis is not just an environmental challenge\, but an opportunity to practice better medicine: a medicine that cares for kidneys\, for people\, and for the planet.

SUMMARY:No Carve Out for Clinical Decisions: Best interests and clinical judgement after Townsend
DESCRIPTION:The Court of Appeal decision in Townsend v Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has raised important questions about clinical decision-making and best interests under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. \nThe case concerned Mr Barnor\, a 68-year-old man with irreversible brain damage who required dialysis. The court ruled that decisions about the care and treatment of adults who lack capacity must be made in their best interests\, with “no carve out” for clinical decisions. This has prompted debate about the distinction between clinical judgement and best interests decision-making. \nWith the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for January 2027\, join our panel of legal and clinical experts to explore the judgment and its implications for everyday practice. \nWhy attend? \nThe webinar will explore the legal and clinical questions arising from the judgment\, including how healthcare professionals should approach best interests decisions and disagreements about treatment while awaiting the Supreme Court’s ruling. \nSpeakers \n\nProf Emma Cave\, Professor of Healthcare Law\, Durham University\nDr Alex Cisneros\, Barrister\, 39 Essex Chambers and Visiting Lecturer\, King’s College London\nDr Jan Dudley\, Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist\, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children\nDr Ben Thomas\, Consultant Nephrologist\, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board

SUMMARY:ISN-UKKA Webinar: Dialysis or conservative kidney management for kidney failure – the first results of the Prepare for Kidney Care randomized controlled trial
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for Kidney Care is the first randomized controlled trial comparing preparation for dialysis with conservative kidney management in older people approaching kidney failure. \nWhile a combination of quality and length of life formed the primary outcome\, many other outcomes relevant for shared informed decision making have been studied. \nPrepare for Kidney Care was conducted across 31 kidney units in the UK\, recruiting 445 participants who were then followed for an average of 4.5 years. This webinar will begin by setting out what is already known about this topic\, before moving on to explain the design and present the results and conclusions. An expert patient and independent expert health professional will then reflect on the findings. Finally\, there will be an opportunity for webinar attendees to put questions to the panel. \nLearning objectives: \n\nTo understand what is currently known about the effectiveness of dialysis and conservative kidney management in older people living with kidney failure and multimorbidity or frailty.\nTo learn whether/ how the relative effectiveness of the treatments changes when a randomised controlled trial approach is used to ensure a fair comparison between the two treatments.\nTo understand when\, and in whom\, the findings can be used in shared informed decision making\, and when\, and in whom\, they might need to be used more cautiously.\n\nFurther reading: \n\nThe Prepare for Kidney Care Study: prepare for renal dialysis versus responsive management in advanced chronic kidney disease\nPreparing for responsive management versus preparing for renal dialysis in multimorbid older people with advanced chronic kidney disease (Prepare for Kidney Care): Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial\n\nModerators: Meg Jardine (Australia) & Jos Darling (UK) \nSpeakers: \n\nBarnaby Hole (UK)\nJo Worthington (UK)\nFergus Caskey (UK)\nFiona Loud (UK)\nJane Schell (USA)
