The DAYLife Shared Haemodialysis Care Mentoring Programme has received a High Commendation at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2026, recognising its work to support the development of shared haemodialysis care across the UK.
The programme received the High Commendation in the Patient Safety Education and Training Award category at the awards ceremony on Monday 28 September, following its shortlisting earlier this year.
The initiative brought together five kidney centres experienced in shared haemodialysis care with five centres looking to develop or expand their own approach. Through structured centre-to-centre mentoring, training and quality improvement support, teams shared practical experience, built local expertise and worked to embed shared haemodialysis care within their services.
Shared haemodialysis care gives people receiving in-centre haemodialysis the opportunity to learn about and participate in aspects of their own treatment if they wish, helping to build confidence, independence and understanding of their care.
The mentoring programme was delivered through DAYLife (Dialysis at Yours: Life fulfilled), one of KQIP's National Projects. Led by KQIP, DAYLife is supported by the UK Kidney Association, Kidney Care UK, the National Kidney Federation and Fresenius Medical Care, bringing organisations together to support improvements in access to home dialysis therapies.
The High Commendation is a significant achievement for the programme and reflects the commitment of the mentors, mentees and participating kidney centres, as well as the organisations supporting DAYLife. Their collaboration and willingness to share experience have been central to the programme's success.
