The UKKA congratulates Prof Menna Clatworthy on appointment to Regius Professor of Medicine

Professor Menna Clatworthy, a long-standing UKKA member, has been appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford. She will be the first woman and the first nephrologist to hold the position.

Her appointment marks a historic milestone for women in medicine and a significant achievement for nephrology. For the UKKA, it is a moment of particular pride to celebrate a member whose leadership and contributions reflect the expertise within the UK kidney community.

Professor Clatworthy is currently Professor of Translational Immunology at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease. She combines her academic work with clinical practice as an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Her research explores how the environments within organs shape immune-cell function and how antibody responses are regulated. Her discoveries have advanced understanding of immune responses in kidney disease, transplantation and infection.

Professor Clatworthy’s contributions were recognised early in her career with the Raine Award in 2006 for her work on immune inhibition. Twenty years on, the UKKA is proud to celebrate this latest achievement of a long-standing member and leader in the UK kidney community.

Approved by the King, her appointment takes effect on 1 March 2027. She will succeed Professor Sir John Bell and become a Fellow of Christ Church.

We extend our congratulations to Professor Clatworthy on this distinguished appointment.
