We are pleased to announce a new edition to the UK Kidney Education Hub which now hosts documents and resources related to the National Paediatric Renal Nursing Competencies, consisting of a theory workbook and practical competencies.

This follows the launch of the complete competencies on the NHS Digital Learning Solutions (DLS) platform. The fully digitised framework is the result of a national collaboration and is now available to all 14 paediatric kidney centres across the UK and Ireland.

Developed and ratified by the Paediatric Nephrology Nurses Group, these resources represent a significant step toward unifying and enhancing the standard of paediatric renal nursing education. Delivered as part of a national pilot, the competencies aim to streamline training, ensure consistent standards, clarify career progression, and improve nurse mobility across centres.

Addressing Challenges in Paediatric Nephrology Nursing

The competencies were designed to address long-standing challenges in the paediatric nephrology nursing field. By consolidating education materials into one coherent framework, they standardise training across sites, eliminating inconsistencies and reducing the burden on individual units to create their own resources. Importantly, they align with validated and evidence-based programmes to guarantee high-quality, uniform education nationwide.

The framework also includes clear pathways for career progression and specialisation, a critical element in boosting staff retention and job satisfaction. Nurses are now better equipped to understand their professional journey and pursue advancement confidently.

Another transformative feature is the centralised tracking of competency achievement, which ensures transparency, identifies areas for further development, and facilitates the smooth transfer of nurses between units.

While the rollout of access will vary between centres, unit leads and educators are encouraged to consult the provided FAQ resources and guide their teams through the onboarding process. This launch marks the beginning of a new chapter in paediatric renal nursing—one grounded in collaboration, consistency, and excellence.
