Christine Maville, Nurse Consultant at the National Renal Complement Therapeutics Centre (NRCTC) at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne, has been named Renal Nurse of the Year 2026 at the British Journal of Nursing Awards, held at BMA House, London, on Friday 20 March.
Christine leads the nursing service at the NRCTC, a national centre specialising in complement-mediated kidney diseases. Her work focuses on coordinating complex care for patients with rare and immune-mediated kidney conditions, supporting the delivery of advanced therapeutics, and working across specialist teams to improve patient outcomes.
Her background is in children’s nursing, initially working on a children’s surgical ward before training and working as a Health Visitor. She later moved into renal nursing, spending more than a decade as a Clinical Nurse Specialist specialising in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease at a tertiary centre before joining the NRCTC in 2020 as a Nurse Specialist. She was subsequently appointed Nurse Consultant and now leads the centre’s nursing service.
The award was presented by 2024 Winner, Maria Fernandez, Lead Nurse for Renal Transplant Services at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, representing the UK Kidney Association and the Association of Nephrology Nurses UK.
Two further renal nurses were recognised by the judges:
- Silver: Joana Teles, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CKD), Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
- Bronze: Sarah Milne, Kidney Nurse Consultant, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust
The British Journal of Nursing Awards celebrate excellence in nursing research, practice and leadership across the UK. The UK Kidney Association congratulates Christine and all those recognised for their contribution to kidney care.
