The UK Kidney Association (UKKA) is inviting expressions of interest for the role of Multi-Professional Team (MPT) Chair of the UKKA Kidney Patient Safety Committee (KPSC). The role is supported by a parallel Medical Co-Chair position, providing shared leadership and collaborative working across the Committee.

This is an excellent opportunity for a kidney professional with an interest in patient safety, quality improvement and multidisciplinary working to help shape national discussions and improvements in kidney care safety across the UK.

We recognise that leadership roles can feel difficult to take on alongside busy clinical roles, so we are very open to flexible approaches to the position, including:

  • Job-share arrangements
  • Mentoring and support from experienced committee members
  • Support from the UKKA Secretariat team
  • Opportunities to develop leadership experience gradually

The Committee is welcoming and collaborative, and applications are encouraged from individuals who may not previously have held a national leadership role.

About the Kidney Patient Safety Committee

The Kidney Patient Safety Committee plays a central role in advancing patient safety across kidney services in the UK. The Committee provides clinical leadership, strategic oversight and expert guidance to support improvements in safety culture, systems and outcomes for people living with kidney disease.

Committee meetings are typically held monthly.

The Committee works to:

  • Review and respond to emerging safety alerts and national reports
  • Support learning from incidents and promote best practice
  • Contribute to quality improvement and safety standards in nephrology
  • Work collaboratively with UKKA committees, professional groups and external stakeholders

About the MPT Chair Role

The MPT Chair will help provide leadership to the Committee and will:

  • Support and facilitate Committee meetings
  • Champion multidisciplinary engagement and collaboration
  • Help shape UKKA patient safety priorities and initiatives
  • Act as an ambassador for patient safety within the kidney community
  • Contribute to guidance, safety initiatives and shared learning where appropriate

Applicants should be:

  • A healthcare professional working within kidney services (e.g. nursing, pharmacy, AHP or clinical science)
  • A current member of UKKA

The appointment is for a three-year term.

To register your interest, please send a brief statement outlining your interest and relevant experience to ukka@ukkidney.org by 29 June 2026.

Message from the current MPT Co-Chair, Karen Jenkins

“KPSC is a proactive and inclusive committee which values the knowledge and experience of its multi-professional members, external agencies, industry partners and patient charities.

Being MDT Co-Chair for the past six years has been a fantastic experience, working with a wide range of people from all disciplines and backgrounds. As Co-Chair, I have had the opportunity to guide and facilitate the work of our committee members, influence practice and drive change to benefit both our patients and the wider kidney care community.

This is a great opportunity to get involved in the practicalities of real-time safety issues with the support of the UKKA team, to share learning and experience, and ultimately to improve the safety of our patients. You can make a difference.”
