A significant proportion of people receiving dialysis also live with diabetes, creating complex challenges for both care teams and individuals.

The UK Kidney Association has launched a new online training module, Diabetes in Dialysis, based on the 2023 JBDS-IP/UKKA Management of Adults with Diabetes on Dialysis Guideline.

This multiprofessional course translates national guidance into practical education for kidney care teams. It is designed for consultants, registrars, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, technicians and allied professionals.

The training includes nine focused modules, audit tools and a charter for people with diabetes on dialysis.

It covers:

  • Safe glycaemia monitoring and hypoglycaemia prevention
  • Medication adjustment and adherence
  • Early recognition and management of complications such as foot disease and retinopathy
  • Dietary advice
  • Compassionate end-of-life care

By completing the course, participants will be equipped to deliver safer, more consistent and person-centred care for people with diabetes on dialysis.
