From Senior Registrars to Specialty Renal Trainees

The “Nephrology Senior Registrar Club” held its first meeting at Wadham College, Oxford in March 1988. It was established to give nephrology trainees a dedicated forum to meet, build professional connections and discuss the educational and workforce issues affecting them at a time when the specialty was expanding rapidly. The group became the Specialist Registrar Club in 1996 following changes to medical training grades.

Growing a National Trainee Community

Over time, it developed a national committee structure with representatives from training regions across the UK and established regular trainee meetings combining clinical education, discussion and networking.

Closer links were later formed with the Renal Association, now the UK Kidney Association, ensuring that trainee perspectives were represented within the organisation. Specialty renal trainees now contribute to UKKA Committees, Special Interest Groups, national initiatives and UK Kidney Week, while the group continues to connect trainees and support collaboration across the UK.
