Apply to use UKRR data
UK Renal Registry (UKRR) data support clinical audit and research to improve kidney care. Healthcare professionals and researchers can apply for summary analyses or patient-level data, or work with the UKRR on a grant application.
Contact us to discuss your project, the information you need and any statistical support required.
Before you apply
The information you need may already be available through our data portals or reports and research.
The portals provide interactive national and centre-level results. Our reports and publications present findings from clinical audit and research using registry data.
The UKRR holds several datasets that support clinical audit and research. Requests are assessed against the information available and the permissions that apply to each collection.
The collections covered by the existing access guidance are:
- CKD and KRT clinical data – including information about people receiving dialysis for AKI
- AKI laboratory alert data
- COVID-19 data
- Patient-reported data – including patient experience, outcomes and activation measures
- NHS England renal service quality dashboard data
Depending on the collection and your project, you can request:
- Aggregate data: anonymised results describing groups of patients, usually presented in tables or graphs. These are also called summary data.
- Patient-level data: pseudonymised records about individual patients, released subject to approval and a data sharing agreement.
The information available varies by reporting period, patient group and completeness.
Linked transplant data
The UKRR can also consider requests for five items from its linked NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) dataset:
- Date of transplant
- Transplant donor type
- Type of transplant received
- Cold ischaemia time
- Human leukocyte antigen mismatch
If release is approved, you will need to complete an additional NHSBT data release form. The UKRR will liaise with NHSBT on your behalf.
For other transplant data, follow the NHSBT data access guidance.
Patient-level data can be released only to eligible academic and clinical organisations based in the UK, the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. They cannot be released to commercial organisations.
Contact ukrr-research@ukkidney.org if you are unsure whether your organisation or project is eligible.
There may be a charge for supplying data or providing statistical support. Discuss your requirements with the UKRR team so that the work and any associated costs can be agreed.
You may be asked to complete a costing form describing your project and the support required. Quotes are valid for up to 12 months.
If UKKA statisticians will support your approved project, you will need to complete a publication planner for review. A senior statistician will then be allocated to your project and meet with you to complete a service agreement.
Contact the UKRR at least four to six weeks before your funding deadline, allowing longer for complex proposals.
We will ask you to complete a costing form describing your proposed project and the involvement you need from the UKRR. Quotes are valid for up to 12 months.
Email your enquiry to ukrr-research@ukkidney.org
If your funding application is successful, you will need to complete the UKRR data application process described below.
Request summary data
Summary data describe groups of patients, usually through anonymised tables or graphs. These are also called aggregate data.
Complete the application form and email it to ukrr-research@ukkidney.org.
Download the summary data application form
You will be notified of the UKRR’s decision within two weeks. If approved, delivery will require at least a further two weeks.
Apply for patient-level data
Patient-level data contain records about individual patients and are provided in pseudonymised form. Applications are assessed by the UKRR Data Review Group.
Patient-level application process
Start by completing an expression of interest and emailing it to ukrr-research@ukkidney.org.
Download the expression of interest form
The Data Review Group will review your expression of interest. You will be notified of the outcome within two weeks.
If your expression of interest is approved, you will be invited to submit a full application and data protection impact assessment (DPIA).
Download the patient-level data application form
Both documents must be received at least four weeks before a Data Review Group meeting. Contact the team to confirm the next submission deadline.
The Data Review Group will assess your application. You will receive the outcome and any feedback within two weeks of the meeting.
If your application is approved, a data sharing agreement must be signed before data are released.
Where your project includes statistical support, the team will also arrange the publication planner and service agreement described above.
