National Kidney Patient Survey

The National Kidney Patient Survey is the annual UK-wide survey of how people of all ages experience their kidney care. Previously known as the Kidney Patient Reported Experience Measure (Kidney PREM), it helps kidney services understand what is working well and where improvements are needed.

The survey provides a national picture of patient experience while giving individual kidney services information they can use to review and improve local care.

Take part in the survey

The National Kidney Patient Survey is now open until 9 November.

The National Kidney Patient Survey 2026

The 2026 survey is open for submissions from 14 September to 9 November.

Kidney teams can download resources to help promote the survey within their services:

The survey is available in English, Welsh, Urdu and Gujarati. The National Kidney Patient Survey is designed to be completed online, helping to improve data completeness while reducing paper use and administration. Read the digital collection policy. If someone is unable to access or complete the survey digitally, kidney teams can contact KQIP for guidance.

Local survey champions coordinate promotion, engage colleagues and patients and support participation across their kidney service. KQIP provides online training and networking to help champions share approaches and address challenges.

The interactive results portal helps kidney teams review and compare patient experience data by question, year and kidney centre. Use the findings to understand performance, identify variation and support improvement.

Using the findings to improve care

Collecting feedback is only the first step. Findings from the adult and paediatric surveys can help kidney teams recognise strengths, identify differences in experience and agree priorities for local improvement.

KQIP can support services to understand and respond to their results. We also want to hear about changes introduced in response to feedback so that successful approaches can be shared across adult and paediatric kidney services. Get in touch

How the survey is developed and delivered

The National Kidney Patient Survey is delivered by the UK Kidney Association in partnership with Kidney Care UK.

Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire are commissioned to analyse the responses and lead production of the reports. UK Renal Registry data are used to support national comparisons and provide context for the findings, while KQIP helps kidney services apply the results through local quality improvement.

The survey was originally developed for adults and first piloted in 2016. Following a programme of pilot testing and validation, age-appropriate questions for children and young people have now been incorporated into the survey. Parents and carers can also share their experience of the care their child receives.

The survey is reviewed each year through groups covering its strategic direction, questionnaire content, analysis, benchmarking and communications. This includes consideration of accessibility, languages, promotional materials and how the findings are reported and shared.

In 2026, the Kidney PREM was renamed the National Kidney Patient Survey to make its purpose clearer to the people invited to take part.
