Acute Kidney Injury

The Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Special Interest Group (SIG) brings together UKKA members and other professionals with an interest in improving the prevention, recognition, management and recovery of people with, or at risk of, AKI.

The SIG provides a national, multiprofessional forum for sharing expertise and supporting collaboration across the different professions, specialties and care settings involved in AKI. Its work includes education, service improvement and the use of data to identify variation and priorities for change.

Online AKI Guide

The UK AKI Guide is a practical online resource for healthcare professionals involved in preventing, identifying and managing acute kidney injury across hospital, community and primary care settings.

Developed with the AKI SIG, it summarises key concepts and actions and directs users to more detailed guidance and resources. It covers medication considerations, primary and secondary care, paediatrics and nutrition.

AKI National Summit

The Acute Kidney Injury National Summit brought together professionals from across healthcare to identify priorities for improving AKI care. The resulting report sets out 24 recommendations covering prevention, detection, measurement, coordination of care, education and recovery.

What the SIG does

The SIG’s work includes:

  • Providing national leadership and expert advice on AKI
  • Connecting professionals, organisations and services involved in AKI care
  • Supporting multiprofessional education and shared learning
  • Using data to identify variation and priorities for improvement
  • Supporting improvements across different care settings
  • Contributing professional expertise to care models, guidelines, national policy and service development

Workstreams

Develops multiprofessional education and practical resources for professionals involved in AKI care. Its work spans hospital and community pathways, responses to AKI alerts and improving access to AKI learning resources.

Works with the UK Renal Registry to improve AKI data flows, dashboards and reporting. This supports more timely and usable information for benchmarking, understanding variation and identifying priorities for improvement.

Supports services to translate evidence and recommendations into practice, strengthen implementation and share learning from improvement work across different care settings.

Works to strengthen accountability for AKI care across clinical teams and pathways. Current priorities include developing a standardised AKI report template to help services use available data in discussions with trust leadership.

AKI Data

The UK Renal Registry receives AKI warning-stage data from laboratories across England. These data underpin national AKI reports and an interactive portal showing rates, demographics, outcomes and variation across different areas.

The SIG has supported the development and use of these resources and works with Registry colleagues to improve how AKI data are reported, interpreted and used to support service improvement.
