Dr Sacha Moore

WCAT Specialty Registrar in Renal Medicine

University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

I first came to the UKKA as a resident doctor preparing to start specialty training in nephrology, and the collegiality I found here has shaped my career so far ever since.

Like many people, I did the UKKA Crash Course in the months before starting my first renal registrar job. It was an excellent practical grounding, and the enthusiasm of the people teaching it confirmed I had chosen the right specialty. I now have the privilege of leading its sister course, the UKKA Taster Day, which introduces nephrology to colleagues still deciding on their specialty.

I attended my first SpR Club meeting on my own, as a brand-new registrar, knowing nobody in the room. I need not have been nervous; everyone was friendly and welcoming, and I left feeling part of something inspiring. The UKKA is a community above all else.

I was fortunate to join NEPHwork, the UKKA’s resident-led audit and research collaborative, which I now lead. The UKKA has trusted and supported us to build NEPHwork, with senior colleagues always on hand for advice and guidance. That backing has allowed us to design and deliver national multicentre projects, and to work with experts at the UK Renal Registry alongside the fantastic communications and events teams at the UKKA on projects of real value.

If you are thinking about getting involved, my advice would be to go for it. It is never too early. Come to a meeting (even if you don’t know anyone!) and say yes to what follows. The UKKA guarantees to make room and offer a warm welcome, whatever your profession or stage of career.
