Transition to Young Adult Special Interest Group
This group aims to optimise the care of young people transitioning to adult services in the UK, to ensure shared decision-making, limit avoidable harm and improve patient outcomes.
Children and young people with kidney disease require specialist care delivered through paediatric nephrology centres working in partnership with local services. The BAPN Clinical Services Committee supports the planning, organisation and development of these services across the UK. Working with NHS organisations, professional bodies and partner organisations, the Committee contributes to national service specifications, clinical standards and initiatives that help deliver high-quality, equitable care.
Clinical Services Committee Chair: Dr Zainab Arslan
National service specifications describe how specialised paediatric kidney services should be organised and delivered. The NHS England Paediatric Medicine Renal Service Specification sets out the requirements for commissioned specialised renal services in England and is widely used as a reference across paediatric nephrology.
The BAPN works closely with national organisations involved in paediatric kidney transplantation. The following resources provide information on service delivery, organ allocation, national activity and patient information.
Supporting young people as they move from paediatric to adult kidney services is an important part of specialist care. The following national guidance and resources support transition planning and best practice.

Understanding the experiences of children, young people and their families is an important part of improving paediatric kidney services. The Kidney Paediatric Patient Reported Experience Measure (Kidney PPREM) supports kidney centres in measuring patient experience and identifying opportunities to improve care.
