Education & Training
The BAPN supports education and training in paediatric nephrology through information on training pathways, national training events, educational initiatives and resources. Whether you are considering the specialty, undertaking GRID or SPIN training, or looking to continue your professional development, we provide opportunities to learn, connect and share experience with colleagues from across the UK.
Training Pathways
In the UK, paediatric training is overseen by The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). Doctors wishing to specialise in paediatric nephrology can apply for national GRID sub-specialty training or develop additional expertise through the Specialist Interest (SPIN) programme.
Paediatric nephrology is one of the RCPCH’s nationally recruited GRID sub-specialties. Applications are made through the national recruitment process, with successful completion leading to entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in paediatric nephrology.
The Paediatric Nephrology SPIN module enables eligible paediatric trainees to develop additional knowledge and skills in paediatric nephrology, preparing them to act as a local lead within their hospital. Completion of a SPIN module does not lead to additional specialist registration with the GMC.
Fellowship opportunities may be available within paediatric nephrology centres across the UK for doctors trained both within the UK and internationally. Posts are usually advertised by individual NHS organisations and may also be promoted through the BAPN newsletter.
National training opportunities
GRID Training Days
The BAPN coordinates national GRID Training Days throughout the year, bringing trainees together for specialist teaching, case discussion and networking. SPIN trainees and those considering a career in paediatric nephrology are welcome to attend, subject to availability.
#KidneySchool
#KidneySchool is a monthly virtual teaching programme organised by current GRID and SPIN trainees. Sessions explore clinical cases, discuss recent scientific literature and provide an opportunity for trainees across the UK to learn together.
Contact the GRID Trainee Representative to join.
Educational Events
The BAPN promotes educational meetings and events relevant to the paediatric nephrology community. Upcoming events can be found in the UK Kidney Association events calendar.
