COVID-19 data

The UK Renal Registry (UKRR) established its COVID-19 data collection in March 2020 to monitor infections among people receiving care at kidney centres. It included people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), those receiving dialysis and people living with a kidney transplant.

This historical collection supported regular surveillance reporting during the pandemic. Information about COVID-19 vaccination was also collected from December 2020.

What information was collected?

Kidney centres submitted information about people who tested positive for COVID-19, including:

  • Date of the positive test
  • Kidney disease or treatment status
  • Treating kidney centre
  • Demographic information and deaths, where included in the submission

The information collected varied between nations and collection periods.

How was the information collected?

Kidney centres in England, Northern Ireland and Wales submitted regular returns directly to the UKRR. Scottish centres contributed through the Scottish Renal Registry, which supplied aggregate figures for UK reporting.

The collection was also supplemented by linkage to national infection, hospital admission and mortality data.

COVID-19 surveillance reports

The published reports cover March 2020 to March 2022, describing reported infections and deaths among people receiving kidney care.

Adult reporting covers England, Northern Ireland and Wales, with Scottish data included for March to August 2020. The reports also include aggregate information from participating children’s kidney centres.
