Submitting CKD and KRT clinical data

The UK Renal Registry (UKRR) collects, validates and analyses clinical data to provide national clinical audit, benchmarking and reporting on kidney care and outcomes.

Kidney services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are required to submit information about patients receiving kidney replacement therapy. Scottish centres contribute through the Scottish Renal Registry. Together, these submissions underpin UK-wide reporting, helping services assess care against clinical standards and identify priorities for improvement.

UKRR data managers work with centres to support submissions, investigate data queries and resolve errors.

How to submit

Daily feeds through the UKRDC

Centres connected to the UK Renal Data Collaboration (UKRDC) send information electronically from their clinical systems through daily feeds.

For information about connecting your centre, visit the UKRDC overview.

Technical teams and system suppliers can use the UKRDC feed development guidance.

Periodic submissions (quarterly data returns)

Centres submitting quarterly data returns should follow the timetable and requirements agreed with their UKRR data manager.

Your Data Manager can confirm the specification and secure submission arrangements that apply to your centre – please contact the team at ukrr.data@ukkidney.org.

Dataset specifications

The specifications define the information to submit, including field definitions, formats and coding requirements. Use the version agreed with your UKRR data manager.

Checking and correcting submissions

The UKRR checks submitted information and works with kidney centres to investigate missing or inconsistent records. Your data manager will advise on queries and any corrections required.

The data completeness portal helps teams identify gaps in key information submitted by their centre, supporting improvements to the data used for national clinical audit.

View the data completeness portal

For centres submitting through UKRDC, corrections should be made in the source clinical system so that updated information can be sent through the feed.

The UKRR’s data quality and completeness measures help centres review their submissions and identify priorities for improvement. The resources below explain the measures and provide historical results for 2021–2023.
