Identify individuals at risk of CKD

Offer CKD screening using eGFR and urine Albumin:Creatinine ratio (uACR) annually to adults with any of the following CKD risk factors: (NICE NG 203)

Key clinical risk factors Moderate Risk factors Non-clinical Risk Factors

Cardiovascular disease (IHD, Heart Failure, peripheral vascular disease, cerebro-vascular disease) Multisystem disease with renal involvement (e.g. SLE) Individuals from areas with a high deprivation index
History of acute kidney injury (AKI) – screen for 3 years (Screen even if function back to baseline) Prostatic hypertrophy Prematurity at birth, small gestational size

  • Early detection of any chronic disease, including CKD, provides greater opportunities to reduce morbidity as treatments can be initiated earlier in the disease course.
  • Because treatments for CKD provide benefits in reducing risk for both CVD and CKD progression, strategies that promote early detection of CKD should improve kidney and non–kidney related outcomes.
  • Even if medical treatments are not available or indicated for an individual, there are recommended lifestyle changes that could be implemented after the diagnosis of CKD.
